Shows like Stranger Things to binge while waiting for season 5

It's been over two years since Stranger Things 4. These shows will fill that void

Stranger Things
Netflix

Stranger Things is a hard series to emulate because it combines so many different genres and storytelling components into one special package. The Netflix series started out as a nostalgic tribute to 1980s science fiction as the fictional town of Hawkins becomes the center of mystery and intrigue and the home of an alternate dimension. Future seasons have added romance, horror, adventure, and comedy elements. When you take into account every element of Stranger Things, you get a show that has been taken from dozens of others and inspired future programs.

We’ve already had to wait over two years since the last season of the show (which had waited three years between seasons three and four.) The long hiatuses the show indulges in asks for a lot of patience from fans. We have you covered, though. If you love Stranger Things, you can count on these similar shows to at least bide the time until the show’s fifth and final season arrives sometime in 2025. These are the shows like Stranger Things you’ll love.

The Walking Dead is a lot more mature than Stranger Things, but the monsters and adventure components make the shows much more similar than people might expect at first glance. The Walking Dead made Stranger Things possible in a way. This zombie phenomenon proved that audiences were hungry for dramas that used horror to create tension on a weekly basis. Follow along as a group of likable survivors fight the dead and each other at the end of the world. The cast continues to get bigger and more diverse, that is, until your favorite character is killed at a moment’s notice. You can also watch several Walking Dead spinoffs if you crave more.

Dead Boy Detectives is one of the biggest what-if series on Netflix. Given only one season to grow, this supernatural teen drama follows two dead high school students who investigate crimes as ghosts. Much like Stranger Things, the show engages with parallel universes and adolescent angst. Jayden Revri and George Rexstrew are underrated in the roles of the two protagonists. If you want a quick binge, this show works well.

Safe (2018)

Safe is one of the best mystery series on Netflix based on author Harlan Coben’s novels. Michael C. Hall of Dexter fame plays a dad in search of his daughter. This storyline is identical to the one from season one of Stranger Things in which Joyce Byers turns Hawkins upside down trying to find her son, Will. Safe is able to slowly reveal secrets about its main characters as the investigation gets bigger and bigger. Hall is his typical superstar self in the main role.

Dark is like if the first season of Stranger Things was extended into three. This German mystery drama investigates missing children and the implications of their absence on the families in the town. The show eventually brings time travel and different timelines into the equation to make for a complex, entertaining, and thought-provoking series that often surpasses the ambition in Stranger Things. It is perfect viewing for the Halloween season.

Outer Range is not only similar to Stranger Things, but its Western elements make it a parallel show to Yellowstone, too. Starring Josh Brolin and Imogen Poots, the story tells of a ranch that is invaded by a black hole and the ramifications of an alternate realm on the small town it’s set in. Not many shows combine fantasy, science fiction, and Western into one. Outer Range is a unique show that deserved more time on Amazon Prime Video to flourish.

The OA is about a woman who impacts her small town in a variety of ways after being gone missing for years. Much like Eleven on Stranger Things, Prairie has a mysterious past that becomes the focus of the plot of the series. The tone and fantastic female lead performance make The OA another one of Netflix’s best series that was cut down way too soon.

The Twilight Zone is appointment viewing for science fiction fans and those who appreciate TV history. An anthology series with a new storyline every week, Rod Sterling’s classic show examined prescient issues plaguing human society through the lens of aliens, technology, astronomy, and more. There have been several remakes and spiritual successors to The Twilight Zone, but the original delivers nostalgic greatness and the best writing of the bunch.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer revolutionized fantasy and adventure series on TV in the late 1990s. Sarah Michelle Gellar paved the way for Millie Bobby Brown in Stranger Things as the kickass female heroin who goes after the forces of evil in her hometown in California. The parallels in the age of the characters, the high school setting, the use of alternate dimensions, the importance of friendship, and occasional levity make both series vital viewing for those who love supernatural fiction on the small screen.

Lots of NBC hits are on Peacock now — here are the best shows to watch

There are definitely too many streaming services. Thanks to Netflix's revolution, every broadcast network and parent company decided that they had to get in on the streaming wars. Peacock TV is NBC Universal's streaming service, and although it may not seem like the most attractive option, there are actually a number of great Peacock movies and shows available on the service that are hard to find anywhere else.
Some of those popular shows are Peacock streaming originals, although there are plenty that initially aired on NBC or elsewhere and have found their way to Peacock thanks in part to the complicated nature of TV rights. Regardless, though, Peacock speaks to the impressive legacy of NBC Television. Growing up, I watched many of these shows as part of my regular nighttime routine. Now, thankfully, they're available at our fingertips anytime. Looking for more streaming options? We also have your guide to the best shows on Netflix, the best shows on Hulu, and the best shows on Paramount+.

Disney nostalgia and awesome new shows to stream
The Mandalorian looks out over the sun

Disney Plus has finally created a competitive library of original series that can compete with other services like Netflix and Max. It's also a treasure trove of Disney nostalgia for anyone who grew up in the '90s and early 2000s. On top of all that, the streamer has released a few of the most popular TV series to come out in recent years, and those series, on top of the deep catalog, make a Disney+ subscription worthwhile.

The streaming service is, at the end of the day, still a streaming service. As a Disney fan myself, though, it can be hard not to get swept up in the magic that the service contains. Disney is an old-fashioned dream factory, and Disney+ is home to many of those dreams.

Penny Dreadful scene

Having a vast library of good television shows and films is the most important factor in the success of a streaming service. That's part of what transformed Netflix into a global phenomenon, and it's why services like Paramount Plus have worked hard to build a healthy library of series that subscribers can browse through. As is the case with all streaming services, Paramount+ has a mix of original series that live only on the platform and older shows that were originally on broadcast and have now found a home on streaming.
Although these shows have varied histories, each one of them is a great staple in Paramount Plus's overall streaming library. Paramount+ might not seem like it has the kind of depth or variety that someplace like Netflix does, but trust me, once you dive in, you'll find that there are plenty of shows to watch and love.
